Stories, Histories, Places, People

Childhood is the only time when kids read about magic, mystery, horror, love and wonder if it's true. WONDER is key for a love of learning and  foundational to our approach to literature and humanities.

BOOKS + LITERACY

If it's exciting, we'll read it. If it's heartbreaking or heartfelt, we'll read it. If it's rich with plot, characters, and the impossible. We'll read it.

The goal is to cultivate literacy through a love of story.

Mythology, classic novels and stories, parables, and lots of poetry from around the world. Students will be encouraged to read far and wide, seamlessly applying what they are learning in their stories to the projects they do.

For example: How does the myth of Prometheus relate to home-built steam-powered windmills?

OR

What can Chinese proverbs tell us about the history of Rome, Istanbul and the Aztec Empire?

Even Green Eggs and Ham is filled with timeless wisdom.

PEOPLE+PLACE+TIME

Change is the only constant.

Natural history, geography and history are combined as students develop a sense of how the world has changed over the past billion years or so.

Explore civilizations, the forces that change them, and the philosophical questions that leaves us with in the present.

Explore the patterns of human groups over swathes of time and how we have lived with and against nature and the consequences.
